Light the Night Walk for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's evening walk and fundraising event. It is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to thousands of people battling blood cancers and to commemorate loved ones lost.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and treatments for other types of cancer, such as chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. These treatments have helped patients live better, longer lives. New targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal tissue are providing drugs and procedures that are improving quality of life.

A donation of $25 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

Diamond Education- Certificate

When comparing diamond prices of diamonds of similar qualities, consumers should consider all the characteristics mentioned on a diamond certificate in order to make a sound decision. This way, consumers can shop items “apples for apples” rather than “apples for oranges”. This also applies when you compare diamonds that were graded by different Laboratories. For example, when looking at a diamond certified by the Gemological Laboratory of America (GIA), a customer should be comparing it against other diamonds certified by GIA as well. The most common labs are the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), the European Gemological Laboratory United States (EGL US ), the American Gem Society (AGS) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). AGS and GIA have set the standard in the diamond industry as being the most credible in their grading techniques and standards. EGL and EGL US are seen in the industry as being more lenient in their grading. In spite of this, EGL US ’ reputation has improved more recently even though its grading standards still seem to be more lenient than GIA and AGS.

Diamond Education- Clarity

The diamond clarity scale ranges from flawless to I3. Diamonds are formed under extreme pressure and heat, because of this it is very rare to find a diamond that has no internal or external characteristics. Such characteristics are natural and help gemologists separate natural diamonds from synthetics. They also help to indentify individual stones.

When grading clarity they grade based on the amount of inclusions in a stone. Inclusions refer to internal flaws. Inclusions include flaws such as air bubbles, cracks, and non-diamond minerals found in the diamond. Diamonds with no or few inclusions and blemishes are more highly valued than those with less clarity because they are rarer.

Diamond Education- Color

The diamond color scale extends from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). While most consumers think of diamond jewelry using colorless diamonds the truth is that they are very rare and nearly colorless diamonds are used in most jewelry. Color grades are determined by comparing each diamond to a master set. Each letter grade represents a range of color and is a measure of how noticeable a color is.

Fluorescence

Some diamonds emit a visible light when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Fluorescence is not a factor in determining color or clarity grades. In fact, it is estimated that only about 2 percent of diamonds are negatively effected by fluorescence.

At Isaac Jewelers we feel it's important for our customers to be educated about diamonds they purchase. We are going to do a 4 part blog series on the 4 C's. The first one will be cut of the diamond.

The cut scale ranges from excellent to poor. A polished diamond’s beauty lies in its complex relationship with light: how light strikes the surface, how much enters the diamond, and how, and in what form light returns to your eye.

3 attributes help to form a beautifully cut diamond: brightness, fire and scintillation.
-Brightness is the combination of all white light reflecting from the surface and interior of the diamond.
-Fire describes the “flares” of color emitted from a diamond.
-Scintillation describes the flashes of light you see when the diamond, light, or the observer moves.

A polished diamond’s proportions affect its light performance. Diamonds with fine proportions, symmetry, and polish optimize their interaction with light, and have increased brightness, fire, and scintillation.

There are 5 levels of cut grade: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. The most common found in jewelry stores are excellent, very good and good. These 3 cut grades show the best and tend to look the best in jewelry.

Conflict diamonds are a huge concern in today's diamond market. The term conflict diamond, or blood diamond as others call it, became quite well-known to the average person in 2002 when the James Bond movie "Die Another Day" was released. This contribution to the legendary James Bond saga revolved around the idea of smuggling conflict diamonds. The movie "Blood Diamond" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly also brought this issue into the main stream. Russell Simmons creator of Phat Farm is also a huge supporter of the movement to stop Conflict Diamonds.

So what is a conflict diamond? The UN formally defines a conflict diamond as a "diamond that originates from areas controlled by forces or factions opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments, and are used to fund military action in opposition to those governments, or in contravention of the decisions of the Security Council."
